Duarte Fernandes
Portuguese diplomat and explorer, the first European to reach Siam (modern Thailand). Sent by Afonso de Albuquerque from Malacca as an envoy to the court of King Ramathibodi II of Ayutthaya in 1511, Fernandes negotiated the first treaty between Portugal and Siam, opening trade relations. His mission established Portugal as the first European power to make official contact with mainland Southeast Asia, laying the groundwork for a century of Siamese-Portuguese commerce.
