Edmundo Gonzalez
Edmundo González was the Venezuelan opposition's presidential candidate in 2024 and claims to have won an election he was not allowed to take office after. Born in 1949 in La Victoria, he spent his career in the foreign service — postings in Belgium, El Salvador and the United States, and ambassadorships to Algeria and Argentina in the 1990s and early 2000s — and retired into obscurity as an academic and consultant. He was seventy-four and entirely unknown to the public when he was nominated. The opposition's actual leader was María Corina Machado, who had won a primary in October 2023 with over ninety per cent and was then barred from holding office for fifteen years by the comptroller general. Her substitute was blocked from registering. González was put forward as a placeholder days before the deadline and became the candidate by default. He then led in every independent poll, in some by forty points. The election was held on 28 July 2024. The National Electoral Council declared Nicolás Maduro the winner with 51 per cent and did not publish the polling-station tallies, which Venezuelan law requires. The opposition published its own, collected by witnesses from more than eighty per cent of machines, showing González with about 67 per cent, and put the images online. Independent observers and several Latin American governments found the official result unsubstantiated. Protests were suppressed with over two thousand arrests. González took asylum in Spain in September 2024 and Maduro was inaugurated in January 2025. He is recognised as president-elect by the United States and several other governments and holds no power in Venezuela.
