Edward Teach (Blackbeard)
English pirate whose fearsome appearance — braided black beard with slow-burning fuses woven in — made him the most feared figure of the Golden Age of Piracy. Operating from the Queen Anne's Revenge, he blockaded Charleston harbour (1718) and held the colony to ransom. Killed in battle off Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, November 22, 1718.
