Ferdinand Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator sailing for Spain, commanded the expedition that achieved the first circumnavigation of the globe (1519-1522), though he did not survive to complete it, being killed in the Philippines in April 1521. He discovered the strait bearing his name at the tip of South America and demonstrated the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
