Francis Drake
Sir Francis Drake was the second person to circumnavigate the globe (1577-1580), plundering Spanish Pacific ports along the way. He played a key role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588) as Vice Admiral of the English fleet. Elizabeth I knighted him on the deck of his Golden Hind. He died of dysentery on a failed Caribbean expedition in 1596.
