Francis Xavier
Co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with Ignatius of Loyola. The most prolific Christian missionary since St Paul, Xavier evangelised in Goa, South India, Ceylon, Malacca, the Moluccas, and Japan (1549), baptising an estimated 30,000 people. He died on Shangchuan Island awaiting entry to China. Canonised 1622.
