Francisco de Montejo
Francisco de Montejo the Elder received a royal grant to conquer Yucatán in 1526. His first and second expeditions failed due to fierce Maya resistance. His son, Francisco de Montejo the Younger, finally subdued the peninsula in the 1540s. The conquest of the Maya was far more prolonged than that of the Aztecs or Incas.
