Francisco de Orellana

Francisco de Orellana in 1541-1542 made the first European navigation of the full length of the Amazon River, from the Peruvian Andes to the Atlantic. Separated from Gonzalo Pizarro's expedition, he descended the great river over eight months in improvised boats. He named the river after the female warriors his crew claimed to have fought.
