Francisco Serrão
Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach the Maluku (Spice) Islands. After surviving a shipwreck in 1512, Serrão made his way to Ternate, where he became a trusted military adviser to Sultan Bayan Sirrullah, married locally, and settled permanently — the first European to establish residence in Southeast Asian islands. His letters back to his cousin Ferdinand Magellan describing the immense wealth of the Spice Islands directly inspired Magellan's circumnavigation. Serrão died in Ternate in 1521, the same year as Magellan.
