Henrique I of Portugal
Henrique I, the Cardinal King, succeeded the young King Sebastian who died at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578. Already in his sixties and a celibate cardinal, he failed to produce an heir, leaving the way open for Philip II of Spain to claim the Portuguese crown and unite the Iberian Peninsula.
