Henry III of France
Henry III was the last Valois king, a capable but deeply unpopular ruler caught between the Catholic League led by the Guise family and the Protestant forces of his heir-presumptive Henry of Navarre. He had the Duke of Guise murdered in 1588, outraging Catholics and leading to his own assassination the following year. His death ended the Valois dynasty.
