Henry VIII of England
Henry VIII broke with Rome over his divorce from Catherine of Aragon, establishing the Church of England and the English Reformation. His reign saw limited colonial enterprise but his religious break from Rome was a precondition for England's later rivalry with Catholic Spain. He also built up the Royal Navy as a significant force.
