Isabella I of Castile
Isabella I of Castile co-ruled Spain with Ferdinand II and was the primary sponsor of Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage. Deeply religious, she drove the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion of Jews and Moors from Spain. She insisted that the indigenous peoples of the Americas were free subjects of the Crown rather than slaves.
