James I of England
James I united the Scottish and English crowns in 1603 and under his reign the Virginia Company founded Jamestown (1607) and the Mayflower Pilgrims established Plymouth Colony (1620). He commissioned the King James Bible (1611) and ended the war with Spain (1604), creating the peace that allowed English colonial enterprise to expand.
