João I of Portugal
João I founded the Aviz dynasty and initiated Portuguese overseas expansion with the capture of Ceuta in 1415. His victory at Aljubarrota (1385) secured Portuguese independence from Castile and the Treaty of Windsor (1386) created the enduring Anglo-Portuguese alliance. He was the father of Henry the Navigator.
