João II of Portugal
João II reorganised and accelerated Portuguese exploration, commissioning Bartolomeu Dias's voyage that rounded the Cape of Good Hope (1488) and negotiating the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) on terms favourable to Portugal. Called the Perfect Prince by contemporaries, he was one of the most capable rulers of the fifteenth century.
