John Cabot
John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto), sailing under a patent from Henry VII of England, made the first European landfall on the North American mainland since the Norse in June 1497, probably reaching Newfoundland. His voyage gave England its primary territorial claim to North America. He disappeared on his second voyage in 1498.
