Jonas Gahr Støre

Jonas Gahr Støre has been prime minister of Norway since October 2021, the Labour leader who won that year's election after eight of Solberg and again in September 2025, when his party took the most seats after the government had looked lost for two years. He is the shipping heir and Sciences Po graduate who had been Brundtland's chief of staff at the World Health Organisation and Stoltenberg's foreign minister for seven years, in which he negotiated the Arctic treaty with Russia. He has governed Norway through the war in Ukraine as Europe's largest gas supplier, with export revenues that doubled in 2022 and a fund that passed twenty trillion kroner, sending Ukraine the largest aid programme in Norway's history under a five-year plan agreed with the whole Storting. The domestic years have been the electricity prices in the south, which the cables to Britain and Germany tied to the continent's and which the government has subsidised since 2021, and the interest rates. There was the wealth tax that has sent a hundred millionaires to Switzerland, the Fosen wind farm that the supreme court found violated Sami rights and that stood anyway. There was a run of scandals of ministers with undeclared shares and plagiarised theses that cost him half a cabinet. He was born in Oslo in 1960 into a family whose fortune was in ships' equipment, studied at Sciences Po in Paris and at Harvard, worked for the prime minister's office and at the WHO in Geneva in 1998-2000, ran the Norwegian Red Cross. He was foreign minister from 2005 to 2012 and health minister to 2013 before taking the party from Stoltenberg in 2014. He lost the elections of 2017 and won that of 2021 with the party's worst share ever, twenty-six per cent, on the strength of the left bloc. The coalition with the Centre Party broke in January 2025 over the European Union's energy directives, which the Centre would not take. He governed alone with Stoltenberg brought back as finance minister, which turned the polls around. The election of September 2025 gave the red-green bloc eighty-seven seats of a hundred and sixty-nine and the Progress Party its best result ever as the opposition's largest party. He has said that the fund is for the generations that come after the oil, and that the oil will be pumped as long as anyone buys it.
