Kim Dae-jung
Kim Dae-jung (1924-2009) survived assassination attempts, imprisonment, and a death sentence under military rule to become South Korea's President in 1998 during the Asian financial crisis. His Sunshine Policy of engagement with North Korea led to the first inter-Korean summit in 2000 and won him the Nobel Peace Prize. His presidency coincided with South Korea's democratic consolidation and economic recovery from the 1997 IMF crisis.
