Mary I
First queen regnant of England who restored Catholicism after the Protestant reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, earning the sobriquet 'Bloody Mary' for burning nearly 300 Protestants for heresy. She married Philip II of Spain in a deeply unpopular union and her reign ended with the loss of Calais, England's last territory in France. She died childless and was succeeded by her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth.
