Maximilian I was the last Holy Roman Emperor to exemplify the chivalric ideal, yet also a pragmatic dynast who expanded Habsburg power through strategic marriages, acquiring Burgundy and the Low Countries. His dynasty's marriage alliance with Spain would unite the Habsburg and Castilian-Aragonese inheritances in Charles V.
