Mojtaba Khamenei
Born in Mashhad in 1969, Mojtaba Khamenei served briefly in the Revolutionary Guards during the Iran-Iraq War before becoming a theology teacher at the Qom seminary and, from 2008, a formal representative of his father. He built a long-standing power base as the de facto head of the Basij militia, giving him direct influence over internal security, before the Assembly of Experts elected him Supreme Leader on 8 March 2026 following his father's assassination in the opening strikes of the 2026 Israel-US-Iran war.
