Muhammad Yunus won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for pioneering microcredit lending through the Grameen Bank he founded to extend small loans to the rural poor. Long an adversary of Sheikh Hasina's government, he was asked by student protest leaders to head Bangladesh's interim government after her fall, taking office on 8 August 2024 with a mandate to stabilise the country and prepare democratic elections, a role he held until a newly elected government succeeded his administration in February 2026.
