Hassan Nasrallah became Hezbollah's Secretary-General in 1992 after his predecessor Abbas al-Musawi was killed by Israel, and built the organisation into a heavily armed, Iranian-backed state-within-a-state that fought Israel to a stalemate in 2006 and became the dominant power broker in Lebanese politics. He was killed on 27 September 2024 when Israeli aircraft destroyed Hezbollah's underground headquarters beneath a Beirut residential building, a decapitation strike that severely degraded the organisation during its 2024 war with Israel.
