Pedro Álvares Cabral

Pedro Álvares Cabral commanded the Portuguese fleet that made landfall in Brazil on 22 April 1500, establishing Portugal's claim to South America. He continued to India, where he established the first Portuguese trading agreements on the Malabar coast. His expedition laid the foundations for both the Portuguese empire in Brazil and the commercial network in India.
