Peter Higgs
Theoretical physicist who in 1964 proposed the existence of a field, and its associated boson, that gives elementary particles mass -- a prediction confirmed 48 years later by CERN's Large Hadron Collider, earning him the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Francois Englert.
