Philip I of Portugal
Philip I of Portugal (Philip II of Spain) united the Iberian Peninsula under Habsburg rule in 1581. Portugal retained its separate laws, institutions and overseas empire under the Iberian Union, but the union strained Portuguese commerce by dragging Portugal into Spain's conflicts with England and the Netherlands.
