Philip III of Portugal (Philip IV of Spain) reigned during the most difficult years of the Iberian Union, as Portuguese resentment of Castilian taxation and interference culminated in the Restoration War of 1640. The House of Braganza, led by João IV, successfully restored Portuguese independence after sixty years of Spanish rule.
