Pope Alexander VI
Rodrigo Borgia, elected as Alexander VI in 1492, was the most controversial pope of the Renaissance, notorious for nepotism and the promotion of his children Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia. He issued the Inter caetera bull (1493) dividing the New World between Spain and Portugal, the foundational act of colonial legitimation.
