Pope Leo X
Giovanni de' Medici, Pope Leo X, was an extravagant Renaissance patron who failed to prevent the Reformation, his condemnation of Luther's Ninety-Five Theses (1517) and excommunication (1521) proving ineffective. His indulgence sales to finance St Peter's Basilica were a proximate cause of Luther's protest.
