Alessandro Farnese, Pope Paul III, initiated the Catholic Reformation by convening the Council of Trent (1545-1563), approving the Jesuit order (1540), and issuing the Sublimis Deus bull (1537) declaring that indigenous Americans were rational beings with souls who could not be enslaved.
