Alessandro Chigi, pope 1655–1667. A learned humanist and patron of Bernini who oversaw the completion of St Peter's Square. His pontificate was marked by conflicts with Louis XIV over Gallicanism and tensions with Jansenism. His nepotism drew widespread criticism.
