Benedetto Odescalchi, pope 1676–1689. One of the most important popes of the 17th century. He rebuilt the Church's finances, condemned Quietism, and organized the Christian League that defeated the Ottoman siege of Vienna (1683). His refusal to accept Louis XIV's nominees for French bishoprics led to a serious rupture with France.
