Antonio Pignatelli, pope 1691–1700. A genuine reformer who abolished nepotism through the bull Romanum decet Pontificem (1692) — one of the most lasting structural reforms of the papacy. He settled the long conflict with Louis XIV over Gallicanism and the Chinese rites controversy, ultimately ruling against the Jesuits.
