Camillo Borghese, pope 1605–1621. A strict canonist who excommunicated Venice in 1606 over jurisdictional conflicts — a crisis ultimately resolved by mediation. He controversially supported the condemnation of Galileo's Copernican model. A great patron of the arts, he completed St Peter's Basilica and built the Borghese Chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore.
