Porfirio Lobo
Porfirio Lobo was president of Honduras from 2010 to 2014, the National Party landowner from Olancho who won the election of November 2009 held under Micheletti's interim government, which half the world would not recognise. He spent the first two years getting the country readmitted to the world and the last two presiding over the highest murder rate on earth. The readmission came through the Cartagena accord of May 2011, negotiated by Chávez and Santos, by which Zelaya came home, the charges against him were dropped, his followers were allowed a party, and the Organisation of American States took the country back the next week. The aid resumed. The murder rate was ninety-one a hundred thousand in 2011. San Pedro Sula was the most violent city in the world for four years running. The cocaine from Venezuela came in on the Mosquito Coast at a plane a night and the government's own men, as the American courts later showed, took their share. The prison at Comayagua burned in February 2012 with three hundred and sixty inmates locked inside. The police were purged and purged again. The lawyers and journalists were killed at a rate that made the country the most dangerous in the hemisphere for both. The Bajo Aguán land war between the palm oil planters and the peasant cooperatives killed a hundred. He also signed the model cities law of 2011, by which private investors could build charter cities under their own courts, which the supreme court struck down. The Congress, under Hernández, removed four of the five justices in a night and passed it again. He was born in Trujillo, studied at Miami and, he says, the Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow. He ran the family's cattle ranches and sat in Congress from 1990 and was its president from 2002 to 2006. He lost the presidential election to Zelaya by seventy thousand votes, conceded, and stood again. His son Fabio was sentenced in New York in 2017 to twenty-four years for cocaine trafficking. The Treasury's sanctions of 2024 named Lobo himself, with his wife, for taking money from the Cachiros cartel, which he denies. It is a country that does not extradite former presidents unless, as with his successor, it does.
