Rob Jetten

Rob Jetten became Prime Minister of the Netherlands in 2025, at thirty-eight one of the youngest in Dutch history and the first who is openly gay. Born in Uden in North Brabant in 1987, he studied public administration at Radboud University in Nijmegen and worked in local government and then at the national rail infrastructure manager ProRail before entering politics full-time. He was elected to the House of Representatives for D66 — the social-liberal, pro-European party — in 2017, and became its parliamentary leader in 2018 at thirty-one, when Alexander Pechtold stepped down. He led the party through the fractured coalition politics that followed the 2021 election, and served as Minister for Climate and Energy Policy in the fourth Rutte cabinet from January 2022, a post created to drive the Dutch decarbonisation programme. That job put him at the centre of two of the country's hardest problems: winding down gas extraction at Groningen, where decades of drilling had caused earthquakes and damaged thousands of homes, and managing the energy price shock after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Groningen field was closed to production in 2023. He became D66 leader in 2023 and fought the 2025 election on a markedly optimistic campaign, deliberately contrasted with the anti-immigration politics of Geert Wilders' PVV, which had won in 2023. D66 surged from nine seats to become the largest party in a near dead heat, and Jetten assembled a coalition. He has committed to housing construction at scale, a persistent Dutch shortage, and to a firmly pro-European foreign policy. He is a competitive runner and married his Argentine partner in 2025, weeks before taking office.
