President of Iraq (1979–2003) who launched the Iran–Iraq War (1980–88) and invaded Kuwait in 1990, prompting the Gulf War coalition. His forces used chemical weapons against Kurdish civilians at Halabja in 1988. Captured by US forces in December 2003, he was tried by an Iraqi tribunal and executed on 30 December 2006.
