Samuel Bellamy (Black Sam)
English pirate known as 'the Robin Hood of the sea' for reportedly sparing the poor while targeting wealthy merchant shipping. Captured the Whydah Gally (1717), a former slave ship he made his flagship. Drowned when the Whydah sank in a storm off Cape Cod, April 26, 1717. The wreck, discovered in 1984, is the only fully authenticated Golden Age pirate ship ever found.
