Sebastian I of Portugal
Sebastian I was a crusading king who launched a disastrous military expedition to Morocco in 1578, dying in the Battle of Alcacer Quibir along with most of his nobility. His death without an heir triggered the succession crisis that led to the Iberian Union under Philip II. Sebastian's mysterious death gave rise to the Sebastianist messianic cult in Portugal.
