Shah Jahan
Shah Jahan was the fifth Mughal emperor, ruling from 1628 to 1658, whose reign is remembered above all for the architectural masterpiece of the Taj Mahal — a white marble mausoleum built for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. He presided over the zenith of Mughal court culture and construction, also building the Red Fort in Delhi and the Jama Masjid. Deposed in 1658 by his son Aurangzeb, he spent the final years of his life imprisoned in Agra Fort, within sight of the Taj Mahal.
