Shivaji Maharaj
Maratha king (1630–1680) who carved an independent kingdom from the Bijapur Sultanate and Mughal territories in the Deccan, developing guerrilla tactics that frustrated Mughal expansion; crowned Chhatrapati in 1674, he established a professional navy and civil administration that became the nucleus of the Maratha Empire.
