Last Jagiellonian King of Poland (1548–1572) and Grand Duke of Lithuania who presided over the Polish Golden Age of arts and learning; negotiated the Union of Lublin in 1569, which transformed the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest states in Europe.
