Siraj ud-Daulah

Siraj ud-Daulah was the last independent Nawab of Bengal, whose conflict with the British East India Company culminated in the Battle of Plassey on 23 June 1757. His seizure of the Company's Fort William (Calcutta) in 1756 — and the subsequent Black Hole of Calcutta incident — triggered the British counter-offensive led by Robert Clive. Betrayed at Plassey by his own commander Mir Jafar, who had been secretly bribed by Clive, Siraj ud-Daulah fled the battlefield, was captured, and executed. His defeat ended Bengali independence and began British dominance of the Indian subcontinent.
