Battle of Plassey

The Battle of Plassey on 23 June 1757 is decided as much by treachery as by arms. Mir Jafar, the Nawab's commander-in-chief, has been bribed by Clive to keep his troops inactive. Despite overwhelming numerical superiority, Siraj ud-Daula's forces are routed in less than a day. Clive installs Mir Jafar as the new nawab and the East India Company extracts enormous financial reparations. Plassey marks the beginning of British territorial control in India: from Bengal the Company expands to dominate most of the subcontinent by 1858.
