Stephen Hawking

British theoretical physicist who made landmark contributions to cosmology and quantum gravity, including the prediction that black holes emit radiation (Hawking radiation, 1974) and co-developing the Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems with Roger Penrose. Diagnosed with motor neurone disease at 21, he survived 55 years beyond his initial prognosis. His book A Brief History of Time (1988) sold over 25 million copies and made cosmology accessible to general audiences. He held the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge.
