Suharto
Indonesian army general (1921–2008) who seized power following an alleged communist coup attempt in 1965, overseeing the massacre of an estimated 500,000 suspected communists; ruled as President (1967–1998) under his 'New Order' regime, presiding over strong economic growth alongside authoritarian repression and vast corruption, and resigned amid the Asian financial crisis.
