Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh

Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh has been president of Mongolia since June 2021 and was prime minister from 2017 to 2021, the former army political officer who leads the Mongolian People's Party, the old communists. He won the presidency with sixty-eight per cent, the largest vote the office has had, after the constitutional amendments of 2019 that he had steered through parliament made the term six years, single, and the president weaker. It was a bargain he then took the strong side of. He was born in Ulaanbaatar, and trained at the military academy as a political officer and served as one until the army stopped having them. He took a law degree, sat in parliament from 2000, and was the party's secretary-general, deputy prime minister twice, and the head of the youth league. That is the ladder in a party that kept its ladder. The premiership was the IMF programme of 2017 that rescued the country from the debt the boom had left, and the coal exports to China that paid for it. There were the Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi shares given to every citizen and worth very little, and the pandemic, in which the country closed its border and had almost no cases for a year and then very many. There was his resignation in January 2021 over a video of a woman who had just given birth being moved with her baby in slippers to a quarantine hotel in a Mongolian January, which filled the square. He answered it by resigning and running for president five months later. The presidency has been the arguments the office is for. There was the foreign policy of the two neighbours and the third, Putin received in September 2024 in defiance of the International Criminal Court's warrant. The country, which imports all its fuel from Russia, did not think it could refuse. There were the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline that would cross the steppe and has not been agreed, and the corruption of the coal trade, in which the state's own coal was stolen at the border in quantities the protests of December 2022 put at billions. There was the fall of the prime minister Oyun-Erdene in June 2025 after his son's birthday photographs. That was the young against the party and the party survived it. His party holds parliament and his term runs to 2027. The presidency he made single is the one he cannot run for again.
