Walter Raleigh

Sir Walter Raleigh sponsored the ill-fated Roanoke Colony (1585-1590), the first English attempt at permanent American settlement, and led two expeditions to Guiana in search of El Dorado. An Elizabethan courtier, privateer, and writer, he was executed by James I in 1618 partly as a concession to Spain.
