William Kidd
Scottish privateer commissioned to suppress piracy who turned pirate himself, capturing the Quedagh Merchant (1698). His arrest, show trial, and hanging in London (1701) were politically motivated — Kidd had powerful backers who distanced themselves. His legend grew from buried treasure myths and the injustice of his prosecution.
